Mental and physical health are not separate. You are a whole human being, complex, unique and interconnected, which means caring for your health requires looking at how your mind and body affect one another.

1. Stress Can Show Up in Your Body
Stress doesn’t only affect your thoughts and emotions. It can also influence your sleep, energy, digestion, muscle tension and physical comfort.
2. Your Gut and Brain Communicate
Your brain and digestive system are connected through the gut-brain axis, helping explain how gut health and nutrition can affect the brain and your overall well-being.
3. Movement Can Help Manage Symptoms
Movement isn’t only about fitness or weight. Finding an activity that works for your body can also support your mood, sleep and stress levels.
4. Managing Medication Side Effects Is Part of Your Overall Health
Understanding the possible benefits, risks and side effects of medication can help you recognize changes and have more informed conversations with your healthcare provider.
5. Speaking Up at Healthcare Appointments Matters
Writing down questions, discussing concerns and sharing changes you’ve noticed can help you become a stronger advocate for your mental and physical health.

These are just a few of the topics explored in NAMI Hearts+Minds, a free five-week wellness program designed to educate and empower participants to better manage their mental and physical health. The class begins September 2 at NAMI Richland County.
